Savalou
Located in the center of Benin, 240 km from Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin, the municipality of Savalou is between 7 ° 35 and 8 ° 13 North on the one hand and 1 ° 30 and 2 ° 6 East on the other. It shares its borders with the communes of Dassa-Zoumè and Glazoué in the East; from Djidja to the South, from Bantè to the North and the Republic of Togo to the West for about 65 km (north-south boundary). It stretches nearly 58 km from west to east and covers an area of 2,674 km².
Agriculture
The economic potential of the municipality of Savalou is fundamentally based on agriculture. It is an extensive agriculture, which occupies in 2003, 40,561 inhabitants including 19,648 active agricultural men supervised mainly by the Communal Center for Agricultural Promotion (CeCPA) (formerly CARDER at the level of the municipality), Non Governmental Organizations ( Local NGOs) and the Union Communale des Producers (UCP). The techniques of agricultural production used are the cultivation on mounds, on ridges, flat, the practice of the rotation and the rotation with the fallow. Rainfall is quite favorable to agricultural work; large areas of cultivable land are still available; 17.84% of the municipality's territory is cultivated, ie 30% of the cultivable area; which corresponds to 45300 ha.
Many production and processing structures (10) or marketing (61) of agricultural products are active in the municipality in 2002. The Municipality of Savalou has great potential in livestock with a herd consisting of cattle, small ruminants in constant evolution and poultry. The main crops are: yam, cassava, maize, rice, cowpea, cashew and vegetable crops.
The processing of agricultural products is the sector of activity which is currently experiencing a prodigious development in the municipality. Mainly exercised by women organized mostly in groups. This activity creates added value for the economy of the municipality and avoids the selling off of agricultural products. Among the different types of processing, the transformation of cassava flour commonly known as "Gari" is the one that occupies the most people in the municipality of Savalou which is the reference in Benin in this area.
Breeding
The breeding is mainly practiced by the Peulh especially to the west of the commune. There are more than 30,000 head of cattle and sheep. Domestic livestock (goats, pigs and poultry) complete agriculture; but is weakly associated with agriculture. The SONGHAI project in Kpakpassa on the way to Tchetti introduces young people to agricultural work and is a veritable center for poultry breeding, training and introduction to self-employment. Livestock grazing areas and transhumance corridors are unfortunately not respected; which sometimes leads to bloody conflicts between breeders and farmers.
Fisching
Fishing is done in isolation and is only a secondary activity.Agro-industry is very little developed in the commune.
